I signed up for the freedom, the creativity, and the ability to choose projects that excite me. What I didn’t fully expect was just how much my clients would shape the direction of my career… and how much I’d learn because of them.

Over the last couple of years, working with different clients has nudged (and occasionally shoved!) me into new skills, new platforms, and whole new worlds of work. And honestly? It’s been fun. Properly fun.
Somewhere between planning communication strategies and writing press materials, I’ve found myself learning how to create online courses and websites on Klaviyo—a platform I previously only associated with email newsletters. Not anymore. Now I can map out flows, build landing pages, and piece together a whole customer journey. It’s become a little playground of creativity.

Then there was the moment a client casually asked if I “knew anything about running a Shopify store.” At the time, the answer was a solid no. But freelance life turns no into “give me 48 hours.” Fast-forward and suddenly I’m managing products, tweaking themes, and figuring out checkout settings like it's second nature. Shopify: conquered.

Speaking of platforms, another client project led me to build a full student course on Udemy, which was both challenging and engaging. I scripted, recorded, edited, uploaded, rewrote, re-uploaded, and learned - fast. One of those moments where you realise, “I didn’t know how to do this two months ago, and now look at me!”

Webinars? Same story. I’ve gone from attending them to singlehandedly arranging and running them—managing speakers, designing slides, coordinating the tech, and pressing all the right buttons at the right time. There’s a special kind of adrenaline that comes from hosting a live event and watching everything (mostly) go smoothly.

And then there are the quieter victories: becoming a total whizz with Microsoft Forms, refining my audio and video editing skills, and discovering little efficiencies that make big differences.

What I love most is that every new skill arrives wrapped inside a client project. I’m not learning in a vacuum—I’m learning because someone trusts me, believes in me, or needs me to help them bring something important to life. That’s the magic of freelancing: you grow with your clients, not just for them.

So here’s to the next unexpected challenge, the next platform I’ve never heard of, the next skill I didn’t know I needed. If the last few years have taught me anything, it’s that freelancing isn’t just a job—it’s an evolving adventure. And I’m absolutely here for that.

The Power of Collaboration: When Micro Businesses Make Mighty Partnerships

https://www.faithfulcomms.com/blog/the-power-of-collaboration-when-micro-businesses-make-mighty-partnerships

https://www.faithfulcomms.com/blog/the-power-of-collaboration-when-micro-businesses-make-mighty-partnerships#comments

Uncategorized

One of the biggest myths about freelancing or running a tiny micro business is that you’re out there doing everything alone. Just you, your laptop, your seventh cup of tea, and a to-do list that seems to replenish itself while you sleep. But one of the most unexpected (and genuinely wonderful) parts of my freelance journey has been discovering just how powerful collaboration can be—especially with other micro businesses.

My partnership with Reflection PR is a great example. What started as helping to cover maternity leave has grown into a brilliant working relationship built on trust, respect, and shared expertise. There’s something incredibly energising about working alongside another small business —where we both recognsie the pace, the juggling, the flexibility required when you’re not a huge agency but still want to deliver seriously high-quality work.

We didn’t need a big onboarding meeting or layers of sign-off. We simply clicked, divided the work, and just… got things done. The collaboration felt natural, easy, and mutually beneficial. I wasn’t just filling a gap—I was becoming part of their extended team, contributing ideas and learning from them in equal measure. That’s the beauty of small-business-to-small-business partnerships: you lift each other up rather than compete.

And then there’s the wonderfully random story of how I landed my work with LKOTT, a medical communications agency. You know those moments where life nudges you in a direction you weren’t expecting? For us, it happened while giving blood. A casual conversation—one of those chatty, “so what exactly do you do?” exchanges—led to a connection that turned into three years of ongoing collaboration.

What made it work so well was that our skills didn’t just align—they complemented each other perfectly. Where Lisa brought deep medical knowledge and technical insight, I brought communications clarity, structure, storytelling and the power to get stuff done.

Before long, we were working together like a well-rehearsed double act. It’s amazing how far a simple shared curiosity and openness to opportunity can take you.

Collaborating with micro businesses is powerful because:

You grow together. Each project becomes a learning experience rather than a transaction.

You trust each other. With fewer people and less bureaucracy, you build real relationships quickly.

You can be flexible. No one needs a two-week sign-off process—we just roll up our sleeves and get on with it.

You amplify your strengths. Your skill sets interlock rather than overlap, giving clients a richer, fuller service.

You’re rooting for each other. Success feels shared, not competitive.

In a world that can sometimes make micro businesses feel small, collaboration makes us mighty. Whether it’s a formal partnership, a temporary gap-fill, or a chance conversation while donating blood, the right collaborations have a habit of showing up when you least expect them—and turning into something far bigger than the sum of their parts.

Here’s to more shared projects, surprising opportunities, and the brilliant micro businesses that make freelance life feel anything but lonely.

10 years of Faithful Comms!

https://www.faithfulcomms.com/blog/10-years-of-faithful-comms

https://www.faithfulcomms.com/blog/10-years-of-faithful-comms#comments

Uncategorized

Faithful Comms is now a decade old!
